Abstract

This current study tries to explore and explain the realization of swear words and its function in the movie of Carrie 2013. The researcher adopted the proposal of theory which written by M.Ljung and Hitsch to know those classification. The researcher understood that this swear words were taboo in the term of social culture in Indonesia however it might be beneficial to be taught for leaners in the context of learning English. This current study employed descriptive qualitative research which in specific library research. The instruments were the list of table proposed by M.Ljung and Hitsch to give the code for a single utterance. This study resulted that there were numbers of types which spoken by the speakers in the movie of Carrie: religious theme (3 utterances), scatological theme (8 utterances), sexual activity’s theme (9 utterances), sex organ’s theme (4 utterances), and minor theme (3 utterances) while the function of swear words could be such cursing (4 utterances), abuse (4 utterances), expletive (4 utterances), denunciation (3 utterances), and unfound for both fulmination and objurgation. This study might be concluded that the realization of types of swear words and its functions were existed in a single utterance of social communication. In term of teaching practices, the teachers could then facilitate the theory or information of taboo but not for practices.
