Abstract
Writing as one of English skills is a challenge to students. Teaching writing for Junior High School is not an easy job. To teach writing, teacher seldom uses certain methods to teach writing. Moreover, the teaching writing is generally felt boring and even confusing for learners because it needs more analytical ability. It is the task for the teacher to encourage their students to learn to write in the target language. But the problems are different character and competencies students can also be a barrier which may be faced by teacher when he or she teaches in classroom. From this case the researcher intends to conduct the research applying a learning method which is expected to be helpful and beneficial for students as well teachers.
As stated in school-based curriculum, descriptive text is one of genres that are taught in Junior High School. In this final project, the writer uses teams’ games tournaments method as an alternative in teaching descriptive. The writer wants to know the influence of teams’ games tournaments method for helping students produce a simple descriptive text in writing class. This research conducted to answer the research questions are:
1. How is the implementation of TGT to improve students’ writing organization of descriptive text?
2. How much is the improvement of students’ writing organization of descriptive text after being taught through TGT?
In order to achieve the objectives of the study, the writer designs a classroom action research. The subject of the study was the seven grade of MTs Sudarman Magelang. The classroom action research was done in three stages:
There were eight meetings during research. First, students were given a pre-test. Second, the writer gave treatment to students by TGT method. Next, work in groups, play game in tournaments, the post-test. The methods of collecting data are documentation, observation, and test.
The result of this research showed the improvement of the students’ ability in writing descriptive. It can be seen from their score. The average on pre-test was 2, 10 and post-test was 4, 24.
Based on the result of the analysis, the writer can conclude that the use of teams games tournaments method is recommended for the English teacher, especially for Junior High School teachers to attract the students’ interest and to improve their knowledge in learning English.
