Abstract

The thesis discusses flash animation as a medium in teaching spoken narrative text. Teaching a foreign language is considered to be one of the most challenging teaching practices. Students are usually afraid when they have to speak English. They may feel shy or unconfidence. Usually, students know nothing how to express what they want to say. Students who have learned English for several years cannot still communicate using English. So the researcher thought that there should be a solution to cope with that problem.
This study is about the use of flash animation to facilitate student’s learning speaking of narrative text of the tenth grade students of SMA Islam Sultan Agung 1 Semarang in the academic year of 2012/2013. The statement of the problem in this study is; is flash animation effective for teaching spoken narrative at the tenth grade students of SMA Islam Sultan Agung 1 Semarang in the academic year of 2012/2013? The objective of the study is to find out the effectiveness of flash animation of teaching spoken narrative.
The population of the research was the tenth grade students of SMA Islam Sultan Agung 1 Semarang. The research method was an experimental research, the samples; the experimental group (X1) and control group (X2). The X1 was taught by using flash animation, while the X2 was taught without flash animation. The writer gave speaking test to gather the data. The formula that was used to analyze the data was t-test. It was used to determine whether or not there was a significance difference between students’ score in experimental group and students’ score in control group.
After the data had been collected by using test, it was found that the pre-test average of the experimental group was 67.67 and control group was 68.97. While, the post-test average of the experimental group was 76.30 and control group was 71.77. It was found that t-test was (2.453), whereas the t-table was (2.00) for a = 5%. The t-test score was higher than the t-table (2.453 > 2.00). It was meant that Ha was accepted while Ho was rejected. Since t-test score was higher than the t-table, using flash animation was effective media to facilitate students’ speaking skill in SMA Islam Sultan Agung 1 Semarang.
