Abstract
This study discusses the implementation of Word Squares game to teach common noun in Elementary school. The researcher observed that the atmosphere of teaching learning process at the fifth grade students of MI NU 68 Leban Boja Kendal was teacher centered. The teacher still used lecturing method in teaching vocabulary. The students tended to sit down and listened to the teacher. It obviously made the students bored, low motivated and passive. This study is motivated by the students’ difficulties in learning Vocabulary especially on English common noun.This research is intended to answer some problems: (1) How is the implementation of Word Squares game to improve students’ understanding on English common noun? (2) How is the improvement of students’ achievement of common noun after being taught through Word Squares game? (3) How is the students’ engagement in teaching learning process using Word Squares?
This study was discussed through Classroom Action Research at MI NU 68 Leban, Boja. The school was used as a source of data to get the results from the implementation of Word Squares to teach common noun. The data were obtained from observation, test and documentation.
This study shows that there is an improvement of students’ achievement in learning English common noun after being taught by using Word Squares. The improvement of students’ achievement in pre-test was 62.19, 76.25 in the first cycle, and 87.50 in the second cycle. It means that the minimum standard of score was reached. The students’ engagement in the preliminary research is only 50%. It rises to 70% in the first cycle and 87% in the second cycle after the teacher implemented Word Squares game.The findings reveal that the study of using Word Squares for teaching common noun is successful to improve students’ achievement.
