Abstract

This thesis discussed The Effectiveness of Fairy Tale English Movie “Frozen” in Teaching Narrative Text Writing. The background of the study was based on the phenomenon that teacher used conventional method to teach students and students mostly had difficulties in expressing and gathering ideas, and in writing text correctly. So, the writer wanted to help them in writing especially narrative text writing by using movie.
The study is aimed at responding the question; how is the effectiveness of fairy tale English movie “Frozen” in teaching narrative text writing before and after treatment at the tenth grade of SMA N 8 Semarang in the academic year 2015/2016?. The objective of the research is to help students in narrative text writing and to find out the effectiveness of fairy tale English movie “Frozen” in teaching narrative text writing before and after treatment at the tenth grade of SMA N 8 Semarang in the academic year 2015/2016.
The population of this research was the tenth grade students of SMA N 8 Semarang. The research method was an experimental research, which was conducted in two classes; the experimental group (X G) and control group (X E). The X G was taught by using Frozen movie, while the X E was taught without movie (using Frozen text). The writer gave writing test to gather the data. There were two test; pre-test and post- test. The formula that was used to analyze the data was t-test. It was used to determine whether there was a significant difference between students’ score in experimental group and students’ score in control group.
After the data had been collected by using test, it was found that the pre-test average of the experimental group was 58,778 and control group was 53,333. While, the post-test average of the experimental group was 76,889 and control group was 65,278. The obtained t-test was 7,822, whereas the t-table was 1.66 for a = 5%. The t-test score was higher than the t-table (7,822 > 1.66). It was meant that Ha was accepted while Hσ was rejected. Since t-test score was higher than the t-table, movie was effective medium in teaching students’ narrative text writing in SMA N 8 Semarang. Based on the finding, the writer assumed that movie can be used as one of alternative media in the teaching of narrative text writing.
