Abstract
Background of the study was that students had difficulties in speaking skill at preferences and it affected to their achievement. A Conventional method was used to teach English in the classroom. The students became passive and hard to control. Whole brain teaching method is designed to have well-organized class and improve students’ speaking skill especially at preferences. The questions of this research were: How students’ response to the implementation of Whole Brain Teaching method to enhance students’speaking skill at Preferences at the tenth grade of SMK Ma’arif NU 01
Semarang in the Academic Year of 2015/2016 was, and How the enhancement of students’ speaking skill at Preferences after being taught using Whole Brain Teaching method at the tenth grade of SMK Ma’arif NU 01 Semarang in the Academic Year of
2015/2016 was.The research was conducted at SMK Ma’arif NU 01 Semarang in the academic year of 2015/2016. The subject of the research was the tenth grade students of SMK Ma’arif NU 01 Semarang. The number of the subject was 25 students. The design of this research was classroom action research which consisted of pre-cycle, cycle I, and cycle II. The techniques of data collection were observation, documentation and test. The students were given a whole brain teaching method in cycle I and cycle II. The result was obtained by analyzing the data from observation and the result of the test in each cycle. In the pre cycle the average of the students score was 49.2. Many students got less than 75. In the first cycle based on the observation, there were 63.3% of students joining the class. Then, the average score of the students’ achievement was 70.8. In the second cycle 76% of students were enjoying the lesson. The average of the students’ score in the second cycle was 80. Based on the analysis, it can be concluded that the use of whole brain teaching method is recommended for English teachers in teaching preferences. It can motivate students to be active enjoying the class and can improve students’ speaking skill.
