Abstract
The background of the study is based on the phenomena of English learning and teaching in SD Negeri Kutamendala 01 Tonjong-Brebes. They are as follow: 1) English teachers think that learning language does not need media like a Biology, Chemistry and other subjects, 2) Song as media used to teaching English arithmetic terms , 3) The students’ interest in learning vocabulary by using song, 4) Vocabulary report tends to the result of actual research, 5) The students’ can mastery of vocabulary report from the teacher’s attention.
The problem of this research can be stated as follow: To what extent is the effectiveness of using songs to teach English arithmetic terms to the 4th grade students of SD Negeri Kutamendala 01 Tonjong-Brebes in the academic year of 2009/2010?
The objective of this study is to find out the effectiveness of songs to teach English arithmetic terms to the 4th grade students of SD Negeri Kutamendala 01 Tonjong-Brebes in the academic year of 2009/2010.
This research is an experimental study. The data is obtained by giving test to the experimental class and the control class after being given different treatment. The number of the subjects is 40 in experimental class and 39 in control class. They are IV B as the experimental class (the students who are taught use songs), IV A as the control class (the students who are taught without songs). The instruments are for collecting the data input test, and observation. The test is for knowing students’ achievement in vocabulary report before and after the experiment. There are two kinds of test. They are pre-test and post test. And observation as the last one.
Based on the data obtained, there are significant differences of mean between the students who were taught with the songs and who were taught without songs. The result of the t-test shows that the mean of experimental class is 72.15 and mean of control class is 63.08. Then for knowing the significant differences both in experimental class and control class, the mean above calculated by t-test formula which the result t-count is 3.534 and t-table is 1.66. This means the result of t-count is higher than t-table. The value of t-test is 3.534, while the value of t-table on = 5% is 1, 66 (3, 354>1, 66). The hypothesis is accepted. So, the students’ achievement in English arithmetic terms report using songs is better than the students’ achievement in English arithmetic terms report without using songs. In conclusion the use of songs in teaching of English arithmetic terms report gives contribution to stimulate students’ ideas and help them to express their ideas in learning of vocabulary.
