Abstract

The background of the study in this research is based on the observation some students of MI Walisongo Semarang, in the process of teaching and learning English, speaking was rarely conducted. The teachers teach English only using course books and LKS which emphasize on reading and writing skills more than speaking. This may inhibit their language learning.
The problem of this research can be stated as follows: “How effective is the use of pictures in improving students understanding on descriptive adjectives to the fifth graders of MI Walisongo semarang in the Academic Year of 2009/2010?
The objectives of this study is to find out whether or not is it effective to use pictures in improving students understanding on descriptive adjectives to the fifth graders of MI Walisongo Semarang in the Academic Year of 2009/2010.
The study was conducted at Madrasah Ibtida’iyah (MI) Walisongo Semarang in the Academic Year of 2009/2010. The subjects of this study were the fifth graders of MI Walisongo Semarang in the Academic Year 2009/2010. There were 23 students.
The techniques used for obtaining data were collecting data from the students by using pre and post-test. First, the writer gave a pre-test. It was conducted at the beginning of the research. Then, the second and third meeting was held. It was cycle I. The writer continued with cycle II. The last, the writer gave post-test.
The result of this study shows that the use of pictures in improving students understanding on descriptive adjectives to the fifth graders of MI Walisongo Semarang in the Academic Year of 2009/2010 was an effective media. It was proven by the statistical result analysis of pre-test and post-test. The average scores were 7, 69 in the pre-test and 11, 95 in the post-test. It means that there was a progress from pre-test to post-test, which was 4, 26. The t-test result (22, 421) was higher than t-table (2.07) at 0.05 alpha level of significance. So, the writer concluded that the test was statically significant.
