Abstract

Teacher’s competency in teaching and learning is an important factor in determining the success of teaching session. Teacher’s ability and wisdom in handling the learning process will have direct impact on student’s achievement. As a professional educator, teacher should fulfil four competences that stated in the law of teacher and lecturer number 14/2005. The competences are: pedagogic, personality, social and professional. The objective of this study was to know the teacher competences presented by Ron Clark as the main character in the film.
This study used qualitative research. There were four steps to collect the data, such as watching and capturing the scenes, identifying the data, and categorizing the data. After collecting data, the writer looked for some references to support the problem analysis found in the story. Technique of data analysis in this study using semiotic theory of Roland Barthes.
The result of the analysis showed that there are four competences that cover in the film as stated in the law of teacher and lecturer number 14/2005. The four competences are: pedagogic, personal, social and professional competences. There are eight scenes referred to pedagogic competence, five scenes referred to personal competence, five scenes referred to social competence, and four scenes referred to professional competence.
